Amiskwaciy Academy is committed to helping students achieve academic excellence in all disciplines and to providing students with the advice, assistance and support they need to realize their own potential. Our academic program is based on an equal mix of knowledge, skills and values across all subjects. Using the Alberta Program of Studies as a base, the Academy enriches the curriculum by offering options courses that reflect Aboriginal traditions and values. The Academy also structures the school year into four terms that reflect the four seasons; an approach that echoes the Aboriginal tradition that certain things are best learnt at certain times of the year.
What makes our academic program unique is our focus on using Aboriginal examples and experiences to enrich core subjects. At Amiskwaciy, teachers in courses like social studies can offer a more in-depth examination of the role the Aboriginal community played in shaping Canadian history, and teachers in fine arts can focus attention on traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art. This approach, together with our innovative, culturally inspired programming options in subjects like Cree, dance, and Aboriginal studies, gives students an appreciation for the values and traditions of the Aboriginal community while readying them to meet the challenges of post-secondary study.
Although Amiskwaciy is first and foremost committed to helping students achieve their full academic potential, we also look for ways to inspire and challenge students outside of the classroom. We offer a wide variety of extracurricular athletics (cross country running, volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and field, etc.) as well as activities such as Grad council, Students' Union, Fitness Club, etc. Many complimentary courses such as Art, Foods/Fashion, Guitar, etc., are also offered.
Amiskwaciy draws upon Aboriginal teachings and customs to enrich the physical, spiritual and social development of each student, incorporating Aboriginal ceremonies, traditions and prayer into each school day. Students also benefit from the wisdom and teachings of Aboriginal Elders through our Elder-in-Residence program and the advice of business leaders through our Mentorship Program. At the same time, our Work-based Learning Program builds partnerships with post-secondary institutes and business, encouraging internships, work experience and job placement arrangements that let students explore a variety of career options. Students also have access to tutors provided by the University of Alberta Native Studies Office and NAIT. These tutors are Aboriginal students studying at the U of A who offer both extra study skills and mentoring support.
In the classroom and beyond, we are focused on helping students realize their full academic, spiritual and personal potential.
